Kefir

Kefir contains tryptophan, an essential amino acid that scientists believe has a relaxing effect on the nervous system, which helps the body with the processes that move food through the digestive tract. Scientists have found that the “good” bacteria in fermented foods like kefir may support cardiovascular health

Which is better Kefir or Greek yogurt?

The biggest nutritional difference between the two is that kefir contains more probiotics than yogurt. While yogurt also contains some probiotics, kefir is more potent. If you are looking to improve digestion or gut health, kefir is the better choice

Making your own Kefir

If you have been giving some Kefir “Grains” it’s very simple to make it and you can do it forever

Step 1

Place your Kefir “Grains” into a jar of cold milk

Step 2

Stir it in a bit

Step 3

Cover with gauze or similar and a rubber band. Leave out in a place that is out of direct sunlight.

Step 4

When it has transformed into a curd like substance, similar to soft fetta, it is ready to use.

This can take 24-36 hours depending on how warm the area is. Put a lid on it place it into frig to “stop” the process. It can keep in the frig for 10 days

Step 5

Take a spoonful out and start Step 1 again

Important don’t use it all before starting another jar

When starting your dog on Kefir start small. Just a half a teaspoon at first gradually building up to a tablespoon a day. Some dogs can experience diarrhoea if given too much to begin with.
